Getting to Mexico from NL

The nearest airport to the wedding venue is Mexico City airport “Aeropuerto Internacional Benito Juarez”

Aeromexico and KLM run daily direct flights from Amsterdam to Mexico City so you have at least 2 flights per day.

KLM also runs a flight between Amsterdam and Cancun 3 times per week. While TUI flies only  once every Sunday from Amsterdam to Cancun.

Many other airlines have flights to Mexico city with stops e.g. AirFrance, Iberia, Lufthansa, Delta etc.

Do I need a VISA? Most of you will not but you can always check:

or via your own consulates.

How do I get to the wedding venue?

From Mexico City airport to Hotel Hacienda Cocoyoc.

By car you can follow this route:

Depending on the traffic of Mexico city it can take around 2 – 2.5 hours with one famous curve “La Pera”. The highway has two tolls the first one costs 149 MXN pesos and the second one 82 MXN pesos (cost per Feb 2025).

By Bus: You can take the metro first or a taxi to the bus terminal “Taxqueña” (I suggest a Taxi because of the suitcases) and from there take a bus to Oaxtepec, Morelos. There are three companies (OCC, Pullman de Morelos, and TER) so buses run fairly often, every 20 min or so. From Oaxtepec we can arrange a pick up for you or you can take another taxi to the venue, this is only 10 min from the terminal in Oaxtepec. Rome2rio may be useful for you:

By Taxi: The taxis from the airport can take you straight to any point in the country. This may be very comfortable and worthy because of time, suitcases, unknown territory, etc. There are several companies so you have options to choose from.

Important! take the authorized companies indicated by the airport:

I estimate a cost of around 2500-3000 MXN pesos (+/- €140,-) per taxi (up to 4 people). There are also vans for 7 people.

We are always happy to help so let me know if you need assistance.

Bring a travel adaptor!

I want to do some tourism while in Mexico!

Mexico is a beautiful country with lots to offer, not only for its food (UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage) but also for its rich and vibrant culture, history, nature and of course its warm and happy people.

You can find more information to help you plan your visit on

If you don’t know where to start, here a few ideas:

In the North of Mexico, the Chepe Express: a train that runs from Los Mochis (Sinaloa state) to Creel (Chihuahua state), it crosses through one of the most imposing mountain range of Mexico. The train passes through bridges and tunnels visiting several cities and the majestic copper canyon at the heart of the Sierra Tarahumara.

Baja California & Baja California Sur (Ensenada, La Paz, Los Cabos, Todos Santos): beautiful beaches, the transpeninsular highway runs along the coast with one of the most stunning views when you do a road trip through the country. The area is also famous for its seafood (lobster, clams, shrimp and of course tacos de pescado) and amazing wine and wineries, what more can you ask for.

Are you into colonial cities? Then have a look at Guanajuato, Morelia, San Miguel de Allende, Zacatecas, San Luis Potosí, Oaxaca, Puebla, Queretaro and much more. All in the central region of Mexico and recognized as well as world cultural heritage cities by UNESCO, pay special attention to “pueblos mágicos”(literal translation: magical towns). You will be surprised by the architecture of public buildings, churches and cathedrals, as well as museums and of course, as always, amazing gastronomy.

A colonial city and some relax time at the beach? Then perhaps Oaxaca is the place for you. Oaxaca cuisine (in my opinion) is like no other, with several Netflix episodes such as “Street food Latin America”, “Somebody feed Phil, “Las Cronicas del taco” and more, you will definitely want to visit this city. Once you are in the state of Oaxaca you may want to pay a visit to one of its stunning beaches, from the all-inclusive hotels in Huatulco to its more hippie-sister beaches Mazunte or Zipolite (beware this is a nude beach 😉). Need more? Well guess what? you can also visit pyramids in Monte Albán, or soak your feet with a stunning view in Hierve el Agua.

You don’t want to leave without visiting Mexico City (CDMX)? I agree. A city of more than 22 million people must definitely have some entertainment for you. A few must see: in the city center you will find el Palacio de Bellas Artes, Bosque y Castillo de Chapultepec, Museo Nacional de Antropología, MUNAL, Palacio Postal, Museo del Templo Mayor and Basilica de Guadalupe (this one a bit further from the city center). In the south of Mexico City you can visit two neighborhoods: Coyoacán and San Angel, go to some mercados (markets), try the traditional dishes of the city and visit the Frida Kahlo museum. You can also spend a day visiting the National University Campus with museums inside, several faculties and research institutes,  green areas, it’s library and of course the football stadium.

What about the pyramids? Yes, please plan a day to visit Teotihuacán. You will not regret it. Bring a hat and sunscreen and avoid souvenir shops (unless you really want to buy something there). And if you are planning to go on a hot-air balloon ride to these pyramids, bring a sweater too. It can be a bit chilly in the mornings.

If after visiting Mexico city you still want to hit the beach, then Acapulco is the place to go, only 4 hours away (by car) from Mexico city.  There are also buses running.

I know I know, what about Cancún, the Mayan Riviera, the cenotes? Yes, the south, although mostly known to everyone, will always have something new to offer. You can now tour the region with the Mayan train. Do you want to stay at the beach? I can recommend to stay at the Riviera Maya. From there you can also visit the Mayan ruins like Chichen Itzá, Tulum, Uxmal, and many more. The sun is too hot? Don’t worry, most of the tours will offer you a swim into the cenotes. You are still thirsty for colonial cities? then go see Mérida, Campeche, or Valladolid. You want more fun and adventure? Go to Xcaret (the dinner with the show is highly recommended), Xel-Ha and Xplor. Bacalar lagoon, Las Coloradas or Holbox may also be something for you, have a look.

More about the south? Chiapas! Simply the best coffee you can have, with the beautiful town of San Cristobal de las Casas, the Sumidero Canyon and the Montebello lakes you are surely going to be left amazed.

Día de Muertos? Don’t worry, anywhere you go you will experience it but if you want to be at the epicenter, then Michoacán (Pátzcuaro) or Mexico City would be my recommendations. Pro tip: watch Coco before your trip.

What about close to the wedding venue? Well, Morelos has plenty to offer: Tepoztlán (with a pyramid at the top of the mountain) and Tlayacapan are pueblos mágicos (literal translation is magical towns) where you can enjoy a nice walk through the small towns and buy lots of ceramics, clothes and souvenirs. You can also have a swim in Las Estacas (natural aquatic park) or some adrenaline at Six Flags Hurricane Harbor Oaxtepec. Food? You must try the “Cecina”, a typical Morelos dish: very thinly sliced, salted and aired-dried cured meat which happens to be Thijs favorite dish.

I think I have given you the basics 😉 but there is a lot more, please get in touch with us if you have any questions. Or once you have an idea we can help you with more specific recommendations.

Two last things:

1. Mobile data. If your home provider may be too expensive for mobile data abroad you can consider an e-sim or buying a sim card in Mexico (if your phone allows double sim that would be great!) For example the Dutch provider Odido offers two bundles while in Mexico: 4Gb for 14days a €15,- or 10Gb for 30days a €30,-. With the mobile data from the e-sim or from the Mexican sim you can still use your own WhatsApp number. I recommend a Telcel sim (the main provider of Mexico) and then you can buy data and call bundles such as “Paquete Amigo sin limites” with different bundle options.

Paying in Mexico. While credit cards work and are accepted in many places,  Dutch maestro debit cards don’t always work (in fact almost never) so it is still smart to have cash on you. How much? That depends on your plans, but having enough per day so you can get back to the hotel by taxi would be a nice ‘rule of thumb’.
